Illuminations – Sacred Music of Europe is shaped as a musical journey through Northern Europe: beginning in Germany, moving through France, and then on to the Baltic states, as well as Finland and Poland, and concluding here in the UK. Along the way, we explore a rich tapestry of sacred choral writing from the 19th century to the present day. From the warmth and clarity of the Mendelssohns and Rheinberger, through the intensity of French sacred expression, the distinctive voices of the Baltic and Nordic traditions, and the devotional power of Polish choral music, the concert closes with luminous works by British composers, concluding with the rousing Nunc Dimittis by Gustav Holst.
